I Thought She Was Trapped

There she was, Phat Man Dee
performing at Pittsburgh’s 2004 First Night.
She sang “Crazy for You.”
She sang “Sunny Side of the Street.”
Beautiful voice, black dress, necklaces, jewelry on her forehead,
   white arms, heels, black boa, over two hundred pounds.
Her hair was cropped close.
Guitar and keyboard accompanists;
   Her husband sang with her for some numbers.

I thought “There is a sexy woman trapped
   inside that body.”
Then I looked again. I was wrong.
I’m looking at someone who is
   exactly what she wants to be.
   She is who she wants to be.
She is not trapped.
   We should all be so free.
