My wife and I went to Monticello, seeing the sights
around Washington.
Most impressive and most memorable
were the trees,
We could see that the trees
had grown older since Old Tom planned and had them planted
at his beautiful mansion.
The groves were past their prime. I would guess
they looked their best about fifty years ago, long after
Tom was gone.
Old Tom planned and planted for the future.
Planting trees is an act of faith.
Old Tom had faith
in the green hills and valleys around Monticello,
and in people not yet born.
